Historic Raleigh Fire Bell

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

The City of Raleigh Fire Department will be hosting an open house on the weekends of Nov. 21-23 and Dec. 5-7 at Fire Station 1 for residents wishing to see the historic fire bell which was recently returned to the City’s possession.

Originally cast in 1870, the 1000-pound bronze bell was used to alert the City’s volunteer fire force. During the 1940s, the bell was moved to North Carolina State University’s Withers Hall.

Residents are invited to visit Fire Station 1 over the next two weekends and see the bell. Raleigh firefighters will be available to host visitors. Station 1 is located at 220 South Dawson Street.
