NC Budget WOES

July 2nd, 2008 by David

As the state tries to get the budget straightened out by the end of the fiscal year, which was yesterday, it seems they are struggling to come to an agreement. As always there just is not enough money.

Ironically, Governor Mike Easley is blaming the state’s budget short fall on this years tax cuts. Saying that he opposes some of the tax relief measures that lawmakers have agreed to and that his message to balance the budget appears to be “falling on deaf ears” in the General Assembly, according to the N&O.

The irony is in the recent reports of state and other government officials misusing our money. This goes all the way to the top with the Governor himself spending hundreds of thousands of tax payer’s money on extravagant vacations to Europe.

More recently the Wake County recycling program manager for the county’s Solid Waste Management Division was fired for taken at least 46 trips, some of which included whale-watching off the coast of Maine, four ventures to Disney World and a trip to a Las Vegas casino, the N&O reports.

How can the Government be so loose with their (actually your’s and mine) money, and then so quickly point to tax cuts as the reason for the lack in funds? I also wonder if we are we hearing about everything that is going on in our State and local governments. Do we really trust the N&O to expose everything that is going on? We, the NC tax payers need to hold the government officials to higher standards and ask them to be more efficient with our money. After all, when times get tough for us, we have no choice but to tighten our belts and manage with what we have, shouldn’t the NC government do the same?

I suspect that the budget deficiency may have more to do with poor management of our money than a lack of taxes.
