Another DOT blunder
The News and Observer reports that the N.C. Department of Transportation will close two of three lanes of Interstate 540 West between U.S. 64 Business and Buffaloe Road beginning tonight, Friday the 20th from 7 and continue until 6 a.m. Monday. They are not reporting why the road is being closed. News 14 Carolina reported that the lanes are being closed for repair, however no details.
However the underlying problem is not that the lanes are being closed, Its why does this fairly new road already need repair? How much is this going to cost tax payers? How much money did the dot waste on this road that needs repair? Also why are we not hearing more about this on the news?
Do you really think that tolls are going to fix anything if the state keeps wasting our money on poorly constructed roads? The DOT really needs to be held accountable for there work. Not given more of your money to throw in the wind. If they could actually build roads effective, that do not need to be repaired, we would not have need for toll roads.

Privatize the DOT! Less Government = Less Taxes = Better Roads!

And if they are going to toll Highway 540, they might as well tax the entire outer loop. Why pick and choose certain pieces, all or none?
Did you notice the resurfacing efforts on I-40 between the Wade avenue split and the South Saunders street?
Capital projects like these (roads) cost a lot of money, it seems that the citizens do not have a good way to audit how their money is being spent on roads.

I don’t think the whole entire loop should be tolled. Just the western part.

Larry,
Is it OK to build a publicly free road (ie existing 540), then tax the new part with a toll? That’s like building the half the beltline, let’s say North and East, then saying, we need to finish the South and West part faster so we’re going to toll it. I actually more agree with you though b/c I think it’s unfair to tax an existing road.
I do have a problem with toll roads. If you toll the entire 540, then wouldn’t you, in theory, be able to pay for the entire thing faster? Oh wait, the problem is that the toll will never go away because the road will always need to be “maintained” & “operated” and will probably never be turned over to NCDOT for car and lovin.

thats…”care & lovin” at the end. Other car loving is kinda funny.
