Raleighwood Hijacked by WRAL?

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

It looks like WRAL has started a blog with the same name as this one, Raleighwood. On WRAL, they have pop culture blog postings at: http://www.wral.com/entertainment/blog/2907957/ which appears to have started at the end of May. Yet Raleighwood.net began in February 2008. The one from WRAL seems to have a much different focus that the blog here with the same name.

Long Branch Saloon no more

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

The Long Branch Entertainment Complex which was a staple in Raleigh night-life is going out of business. The Long Branch was a country bar /saloon complete with a mechanical bull and a real dance floor. the “Entertainment Complex” also housed several other rooms including a “hip hop” room. The club was a popular venue for several big name performers and some not so big performers and events like the “Slaw Slam,” a col-slaw wrestling match. Another long standing Raleigh tradition was to head to the Long Branch after a country concert at Walnut Creak Amphitheater which was always a great time.

There is a note posted on there web-site informing the public:

“It’s been the best 26 years of our lives, but now the time has come to say goodbye. Thank you for being the best customers through the years. Sincerely, Fred Wilburn”

NC Budget WOES

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

As the state tries to get the budget straightened out by the end of the fiscal year, which was yesterday, it seems they are struggling to come to an agreement. As always there just is not enough money.

Ironically, Governor Mike Easley is blaming the state’s budget short fall on this years tax cuts. Saying that he opposes some of the tax relief measures that lawmakers have agreed to and that his message to balance the budget appears to be “falling on deaf ears” in the General Assembly, according to the N&O.

Another DOT blunder

Friday, June 20th, 2008

The News and Observer reports that the N.C. Department of Transportation will close two of three lanes of Interstate 540 West between U.S. 64 Business and Buffaloe Road beginning tonight, Friday the 20th from 7 and continue until 6 a.m. Monday. They are not reporting why the road is being closed. News 14 Carolina reported that the lanes are being closed for repair, however no details.

However the underlying problem is not that the lanes are being closed, Its why does this fairly new road already need repair? How much is this going to cost tax payers? How much money did the dot waste on this road that needs repair? Also why are we not hearing more about this on the news?

Do you really think that tolls are going to fix anything if the state keeps wasting our money on poorly constructed roads? The DOT really needs to be held accountable for there work. Not given more of your money to throw in the wind. If they could actually build roads effective, that do not need to be repaired, we would not have need for toll roads.
